Mainstage 2011
Media Release | October 23, 2008
In July 2011 the Powerhouse Theatrical Society will be hosting Theatre BC’s MAINSTAGE festival.
Now over 75 years old, Theatre BC is one of Canada's liveliest grassroots arts organizations. Theatre BC is proud parent to over 80 community Theatre groups across the province, assisting the growth and development of what used to be referred to as amateur dramatics. Theatre BC is a vital, thriving umbrella organization nurturing the spirit of community Theatre -- an association of people involved in Theatre solely out of a love of the stage. Theatre BC and its members foster the growth of professionalism, for always behind the fun is a serious-minded pursuit of excellence.
MAINSTAGE 2011 will bring together community theatre Zone winners from throughout the Province. Over eight days in Vernon, groups from the Peace River district to the Kootenays, from Vancouver Island to the Rockies, will be staging their plays and competing for many awards.
Performers, technicians and theatre lovers will travel to Vernon where they will enjoy a feast of theatre each evening in the Performing Arts Centre. Each day will offer Coffee Critiques, Workshop Plays and “Backstage at Mainstage” – the latter a host of workshops taking place at the Powerhouse Theatre, and led by professional directors, actors and designers.
Vernon’s Best Western Vernon Lodge has already agreed to become the Official Hotel and Accommodation Sponsor of MAINSTAGE 2011.
To help with fundraising, the Powerhouse Theatre is offering a silent auction at performances of its first production of the season, Same Time, Another Year, which runs until November 1st. Two pieces by local artists will be on display in the foyer - a print by local artist Maureen Krause entitled Silver Star Ski School, and an original pastel by local artist Kasandra Bardell entitled Anxious for Halloween.
The Vernon MAINSTAGE committee, headed by co-chairs Anne Clarke and Penny Bayne, is already hard at work overseeing arrangements for the Festival, which will be a major event, a “first” for Vernon.
