Powerhouse Theatre is pleased to announce a commissioned play for the fall of 2017!
A seasoned Canadian playwright has been commissioned to write a play for Powerhouse Theatre! A professional director has been engaged to direct the premiere production at Powerhouse.
Born in Seattle, raised on Vancouver Island, Janet graduated from UVic’s Theatre Program. In 1992, she joined the staff of Intrepid Theatre, which produces of the Victoria Fringe Festival, Uno Fest, Winterlab and OUTstages. Janet remains the longest-serving Canadian Fringe Producer and in 2016 will celebrate her 25th year as an Artistic Director and Festival Producer – and her 50th Festival. Her work as a playwright has been seen both nationally and internationally, including at the National Arts Centre, Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects, The Tarragon, Soho Theatre (London), Prague Fringe, Belltable Arts Centre (Ireland), the West Yorkshire Playhouse (Leeds) and others. Janet has been in residence at the Banff Centre Playwrights Colony serval times and in 2012 was part of the Stratford Festival Playwrights Retreat. Her many plays have been nominated for and received many awards. Her play That Elusive Spark was a finalist for the 2014 Governor General’s Award for Literature, and her adaptation of Pride & Prejudice will be included in The Arts Club’s 2015/16 Season at the Stanley Theatre in Vancouver. She is currently working on a new play Act of Faith, for Vancouver’s Realwheels Theatre.
As a director and actor, Geoffrey has worked with companies across Canada and abroad such as Belfry Theatre, Sage Theatre, Citadel Theatre, Theatre Calgary, Vertigo Theatre, Ghost River Theatre, Lunchbox Theatre, Workshop West Theatre, Nakai Theatre, Sunset Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Quest Theatre, Evergreen Theatre, Shadow Theatre, Chelsea Theatre (UK), Rich Mix (UK), Istropolitana (Slovakia), and Nordurpollinn (Iceland), along with several film and television credits. Geoffrey was recently seen in the Belfry Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol, GRT/ATP’s co-production of The Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst, and he directed George F. Walker’s Adult Entertainment and The End of Civilization for Punctuate! Theatre in Edmonton. Recent award recognitions include: (as director) productions The Dazzle and One Flea Spare (Sage Theatre), both combined for a total of 8 Betty Mitchell Award Nominations; (as performer) Betty Mitchell Award Nomination – Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama, for Trainspotting (Sage Theatre), and Betty Mitchell Award Recipient – Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Comedy or Musical, for Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Sage Theatre). MA in Advanced Theatre Practice at the prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama (London, UK). He is the founding Artistic Director of synesTHEATRE, an inter-arts performance company based in Victoria.
